APRIL 7: The three-member Cabinet Sub-Committee on reservation rules, chaired by Minister for Health, Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, held a significant interaction with various public delegations and students regarding their concerns and grievances about the current reservation policies. The meeting took place at the SKICC (Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre) in Srinagar today.
The Sub-Committee was also joined by other key government officials, including Javed Ahmad Rana, Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs; Satish Sharma, Minister for Youth Services and Sports; and senior officials such as Sanjeev Verma, Commissioner Secretary of the Social Welfare Department; M. Raju, Commissioner Secretary of the General Administration Department (GAD); and Achal Sethi, Secretary of Law. These officials, alongside various senior officers from the General Administration and Social Welfare departments, participated in the discussions.
During the meeting, public delegations and student representatives had the opportunity to present their viewpoints regarding the existing reservation policy. Their grievances centered around various aspects of the reservation rules, including concerns about fairness and accessibility for different sections of society. The Sub-Committee took the time to listen to each delegation, carefully examining the issues raised in order to understand the diverse concerns surrounding the reservation framework.
In response to the grievances, Sakeena Itoo, along with the other members of the Sub-Committee, assured the attendees that the government is committed to considering the viewpoints of every section of society. The primary goal, they emphasized, is to arrive at a balanced and amicable solution that safeguards the interests of all communities involved. The Sub-Committee reiterated that they are open to further discussions with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the final decision benefits everyone equitably.
Furthermore, the Sub-Committee clarified that it would compile a detailed report addressing all the concerns and recommendations gathered during the interactions. This report will be presented to the council of ministers, headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, within the next six months. The Sub-Committee’s mandate, which was established by the Omar Abdullah-led government, is specifically focused on resolving grievances related to the existing reservation rules. These rules have been a point of contention for various aspirants and sections of society, prompting the need for this comprehensive review.
The formation of the Cabinet Sub-Committee reflects the government’s commitment to addressing public concerns and ensuring that all policies are inclusive and fair.
