MARCH 20:In a landmark move to enhance the mental well-being of the nation’s defense personnel, the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) and the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly work on research and training aimed at improving mental health care for the Armed Forces.

The MoU was signed in a ceremony by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, AVSM, VSM, Director General of AFMS, and Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director of NIMHANS. The event was attended by senior officials from both institutions, underscoring the significance of this collaboration. This partnership aims to enhance mental health services, provide specialized training for medical personnel, and develop innovative programs to address the mental health challenges faced by soldiers, sailors, airmen, as well as their families and dependents.

The MoU outlines several key objectives, including collaborative research, faculty exchange, and academic activities. NIMHANS, a leader in neuropsychiatry, will contribute its expertise to advance psychiatric care, particularly in addressing conditions commonly faced by military personnel such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. These conditions have become critical concerns due to the unique stressors faced by defense personnel in high-pressure environments.

In her statement, Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin emphasized that the mental health of soldiers is as important as their physical health. She noted that the collaboration with NIMHANS will provide AFMS personnel with the necessary tools and resources to support defense personnel in managing the psychological challenges of military service. “This partnership will ensure our soldiers receive the best possible care to cope with the emotional and mental challenges they face,” she said.

Dr. Pratima Murthy, Director of NIMHANS, expressed her honor in collaborating with the AFMS. She said, “It is an honor to bring NIMHANS’ expertise in mental health care to the defense sector. Our goal is to provide world-class support to those who serve our nation and ensure they receive the mental health care they deserve.”

This collaborative initiative marks a significant step in recognizing the vital importance of mental health care for defense personnel. It sets a benchmark for future programs aimed at addressing the mental health needs of those in the Armed Forces. Both institutions are committed to developing comprehensive support systems that prioritize the well-being of military personnel, ensuring their overall welfare and readiness to serve.
