May 5: In a significant step towards strengthening India’s undersea warfare capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy have successfully conducted combat firing trials—using reduced explosive—of the indigenously developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM).

This advanced underwater mine, designed to counter stealth submarines and surface vessels, was developed by the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune, and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, Chandigarh.

Bharat Dynamics Limited, Visakhapatnam, and Apollo Microsystems Limited, Hyderabad are the production partners for the system, showcasing a robust public-private partnership in indigenous defence manufacturing.

Congratulating the DRDO, Indian Navy, and industrial partners, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh said the successful trial marks a major milestone that will significantly boost the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities in modern maritime conflict scenarios.

Dr. Samir V. Kamat, Chairman DRDO and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, confirmed that with this validation trial, the MIGM system is now ready for induction into the Navy’s arsenal.
