JUNE 12: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary chaired a high-level review meeting with officials from the Roads and Buildings (R&B) Department, marking the formal launch of the 2025 Macadamisation Programme across Central and South Kashmir.

The newly launched initiative aims to upgrade and macadamise over 547 kilometers of road network this year, significantly enhancing surface connectivity in the region. The Deputy CM underlined the importance of timely execution and strict adherence to quality standards during all stages of the project.

During the review, Surinder Choudhary directed officials to ensure close monitoring of each phase of road construction and maintenance. He also issued instructions for strict action against non-performing contractors, emphasizing that accountability will be enforced to avoid delays and substandard work.

He reiterated that the Omar Abdullah-led government is fully committed to developing a resilient, safe, and durable road infrastructure that can support inclusive socio-economic development, especially in remote and underserved areas.

The Deputy CM stressed that improved road connectivity is not merely a matter of convenience but a critical enabler of progress, affecting sectors such as healthcare access, education, tourism, and local trade. “Our roads are lifelines for communities, and ensuring their quality is our priority,” he said.

He also called for the use of modern technology and materials to improve the life and performance of the road surfaces, especially in hilly and weather-sensitive regions like South Kashmir. Contractors and field officers were reminded to follow specifications strictly and document progress regularly.

The R&B Department presented its zone-wise implementation plan and briefed the Deputy CM on the challenges and logistics involved. Choudhary assured full support from the government to resolve any bottlenecks and expedite the rollout.

With this major road development programme now underway, the government aims to significantly improve mobility, safety, and economic opportunity across key regions in Kashmir.
