APRIL 17: As part of the ongoing Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, a comprehensive drug awareness programme was organized today at Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Paloura. The initiative aimed to educate students about the dangers of substance abuse and promote a drug-free, healthy lifestyle among the youth.
The event was graced by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Jammu, Ansuya Jamwal, who attended as the chief guest. In her address to the students, she emphasized the campaign’s central theme — “Addiction and ambition can’t coexist.” She urged students to remain focused on their goals and stay away from the destructive path of drug use, highlighting how substance abuse not only affects personal health but also derails academic and professional aspirations.
ADC Jamwal also cautioned students against the legal implications of drug-related offenses. She stressed that both possession and transportation of narcotic substances are serious crimes under the law. Further, she encouraged parents and teachers to maintain open and honest communication with children to help them make safe and responsible decisions.
The programme featured informative and interactive sessions by experts from various departments. Sub-Inspector Uttam Singh from the Home Department discussed the legal framework of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, underlining the need for increased community-level awareness and vigilance.
Dr. Varun Kanathia, Excise Sub-Inspector, elaborated on the Excise Department’s role in combating substance abuse. He shared essential legal provisions and provided helpline numbers for children, women, and youth seeking support or intervention.
Dr. Rita Lidwal from the Health Department spoke about the severe physical and mental health consequences of drug addiction. She underscored the significance of early intervention and the supportive role of healthcare services in recovery and rehabilitation.
Officials from the Social Welfare Department — including Manjeet Singh, Ranjana Sharma, and Meenakshi Bhau — stressed the need for a collective effort involving families, educational institutions, and local bodies to foster a drug-free environment. They highlighted available counseling and rehabilitation services aimed at supporting affected individuals and preventing addiction.
Similar awareness drives were also conducted at various educational institutions across the district, including HSS Rehal, HSS Jajjar Kotli, GHSS Chowki Choura, HSS Gharota, and Government Boys HSS Akhnoor on April 15 and 16.
The event concluded with active participation from students, faculty, and civil society members, culminating in a pledge by the students to live a drug-free life and serve as advocates of awareness in their communities.
