Gita and Natyashastra Added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register; PM Modi Hails Global Recognition
NEW DELHI, APRIL 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed the inclusion of two iconic Indian texts — the Bhagavad Gita and the Natyashastra — in UNESCO’s prestigious Memory of the World Register, calling it a proud moment for Indians globally.
In response to a post by Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on social media platform X, the Prime Minister remarked that this global acknowledgment highlights India’s timeless wisdom and cultural richness.
Describing the Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra as cornerstones of India’s intellectual and spiritual heritage, PM Modi emphasized their enduring contribution to human civilization. “The Gita and Natyashastra have nurtured civilisation and consciousness for centuries. Their insights continue to inspire the world,” he stated.
The UNESCO Memory of the World Register seeks to preserve and promote documentary heritage of global significance. The inclusion of these two ancient Indian texts recognizes their historical, cultural, and philosophical importance.
The Bhagavad Gita, a revered spiritual text and part of the Mahabharata, offers profound insights into duty, righteousness, and the human condition. The Natyashastra, an ancient Sanskrit treatise on performing arts by Bharata, is considered the foundational text on drama, dance, and music in Indian tradition.
This recognition is seen as a major milestone in promoting India’s intellectual traditions and enhancing their visibility on the world stage. It reinforces the country’s rich contribution to global knowledge and cultural heritage.
