JUNE 14: In a remarkable display of courage and operational precision, the Indian Navy successfully carried out a high-risk aerial insertion of a salvage team onto the fire-engulfed merchant vessel MV WAN HAI 503. The complex operation, which took place on 13 June 2025, has significantly strengthened the ongoing salvage efforts.
Responding swiftly to the emergency, the salvage team was rapidly mobilized and embarked aboard a Seaking helicopter at INS Garuda, Kochi. The naval helicopter then flew towards the stricken vessel, braving challenging sea and weather conditions, along with the heightened risk posed by the ongoing fire onboard.
Once the helicopter reached MV WAN HAI 503, the salvage team was winched down onto the vessel in a meticulously coordinated maneuver. Working under extremely hazardous conditions, the team managed to establish a connection with the salvage tug Offshore Warrior, enabling the towline to be secured successfully. This critical step marked a major milestone in stabilizing the distressed vessel and initiating towing operations.
Following the successful connection, the salvage team was safely extracted from the burning vessel by the same Naval helicopter, once again highlighting the high degree of skill and coordination demonstrated by the Indian Navy personnel involved in the mission.
At present, the Indian Navy’s INS Sharda and offshore support vessel MV Triton Liberty are actively engaged in the salvage operations, working closely with the Indian Coast Guard and various maritime agencies. Their collective efforts are focused on stabilizing the vessel, mitigating the risks, and ensuring the safety of maritime routes.
This daring aerial operation has significantly bolstered the salvage mission, showcasing the Indian Navy’s exceptional preparedness and ability to respond swiftly and effectively under high-risk conditions. The coordinated efforts of multiple agencies highlight the professionalism, technical expertise, and bravery of the personnel involved.
The Indian Navy’s action underscores its vital role in ensuring maritime safety and protecting national interests at sea, even under the most challenging circumstances. The rescue mission stands as a testament to the Navy’s unwavering commitment to operational excellence and safeguarding maritime assets.
