APRIL 20: In line with the directives issued by the District Administration, a comprehensive joint enforcement drive was conducted across multiple locations in Akhnoor town to ensure strict adherence to traffic regulations and enhance road safety.
The drive was spearheaded by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD), with a dedicated team comprising ARTO Mohammad Saleem, MVI Er. Surinder Kumar, SMVI Amanish Sharma, and MVTA Tarunjot Singh. The MVD officials were joined by Tehsildar Akhnoor Naresh Kumar, DTI Anayat Ali, and the local Police team led by the Station House Officer (SHO), along with personnel from the Traffic Police Department.
Throughout the day, the enforcement teams rigorously inspected over 560 vehicles at various checkpoints in the town. The vehicles were examined for valid documentation, fitness certificates, pollution control compliance, insurance papers, and general adherence to the Motor Vehicles Act.
As a result of the drive, a total of 86 vehicles were challaned for various types of violations, ranging from lack of proper documents to non-compliance with vehicle safety standards. In more serious cases, five vehicles were seized on the spot, due to grave breaches of road safety and traffic rules. The fines collected from the challans are expected to amount to approximately ₹1,58,000.
A particularly concerning finding was the non-compliance by school transport vehicles. During the inspection, eight school buses were found operating without CCTV cameras, which is a direct violation of the safety guidelines issued by the Transport Commissioner. These buses were immediately challaned. The enforcement team emphasized that children’s safety remains a top priority, and such lapses in safety measures will not be tolerated.
Officials stated that the primary goal of the drive was to strengthen compliance with traffic norms, reduce road accidents, and promote a culture of safe and responsible driving. They also urged all vehicle owners and drivers, especially those operating commercial and passenger vehicles, to regularly update their documents and ensure that their vehicles meet all regulatory safety standards.
The District Administration reiterated that such surprise checks and enforcement drives will continue in the coming weeks as part of an ongoing initiative to improve traffic discipline across the region.
