MARCH 2: In preparation for the holy month of Ramadan, the Legal Metrology Department (LMD) of Jammu & Kashmir, under the supervision of Controller Legal Metrology, Anuradha Gupta, has ramped up market inspections across various districts. The inspections are aimed at ensuring compliance with the Legal Metrology Act and other relevant regulations to protect consumer rights and promote fair trade practices, especially during the holy month when demand for essential commodities rises.

Enforcement teams, led by the LMD, conducted thorough inspections in multiple districts, including Jammu, Doda, Rajouri, Srinagar, Kulgam, and Bandipora, targeting traders and vendors to ensure they are adhering to the prescribed legal standards.

In Doda, a joint inspection was carried out in coordination with the district administration, covering approximately 40 traders. This collaborative effort was aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of the inspection process and ensuring that all traders in the region were in compliance with the regulations. In Srinagar, LMD teams focused their inspections on the Batmalloo and Tengpora areas, where they imposed fines amounting to ₹6,000 on offenders. These fines were collected on the spot to ensure immediate compliance.

The inspection drive in Rajouri saw enforcement teams visiting various shops, including meat and poultry outlets, in collaboration with the district administration. One case was booked, and a composition sum of ₹1,000 was imposed on the violator. Similarly, in Jammu, six cases were compounded during inspections, with a total fine of ₹8,000 being collected from the erring traders.

In Kulgam, the LMD conducted a market inspection drive, which led to the registration of four cases against traders who were found violating the regulations. A total composition sum of ₹6,500 was collected as a penalty. In Bandipora, three cases were booked, and a composition sum of ₹1,500 was collected from the violators.

Controller Anuradha Gupta emphasized the importance of ensuring compliance with the Legal Metrology Act and other related regulations, particularly during Ramadan when consumers heavily rely on the availability of essential goods. She reiterated the department’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights, promoting transparency in the market, and preventing malpractices.

The inspections are expected to continue throughout the holy month of Ramadan to further curb malpractices, ensure fair pricing, and protect consumer interests. The Legal Metrology Department has vowed to remain vigilant and proactive in its efforts to ensure that consumers are not exploited during this sacred period.
