President Murmu Awards Kirti Chakra Posthumously to Brave J&K Police Officer

Kirti Chakra upon Shri Himayun Muzzammil Bhat

MAY 23: President Droupadi Murmu has posthumously conferred the prestigious Kirti Chakra upon Deputy Superintendent of Police Himayun Muzzammil Bhat of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in recognition of his unparalleled bravery and unwavering commitment to duty. The gallantry award, India’s second-highest peacetime valor decoration, honors acts of conspicuous courage and self-sacrifice away from the battlefield.

DSP Bhat was martyred during a fierce encounter with terrorists in the Kokernag area of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir in September 2023. In the face of grave danger, he displayed exceptional resolve and leadership by engaging the heavily armed militants in a high-risk operation. Despite being critically injured by multiple gunshot wounds during the exchange of fire, Bhat refused to retreat or abandon his position.

Instead, showing supreme courage and devotion to duty, he continued to fire back at the assailants, preventing their escape and enabling his team to reposition and respond more effectively. His selfless actions not only disrupted the terrorists’ plan but also bought crucial time for reinforcement teams to arrive and contain the situation. By putting himself in harm’s way, DSP Bhat ensured the safety of his fellow officers and upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Police Service.

His gallant sacrifice has been widely acknowledged as a symbol of the courage and resilience of the security forces battling militancy in the region. Tributes poured in from across the country, with leaders, colleagues, and citizens saluting his heroism. The President’s decision to bestow the Kirti Chakra is a testament to the nation’s gratitude and deep respect for his valor.

DSP Himayun Muzzammil Bhat’s actions stand as a shining example of extraordinary courage in the face of imminent threat. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of police personnel and citizens alike. The Kirti Chakra awarded to him serves not only as a national honor but also as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the men and women who risk their lives daily to safeguard the country’s peace and security.
