MARCH 16:The Legal Metrology Department (LMD) of Jammu and Kashmir, under the guidance of Controller Anuradha Gupta, celebrated World Consumer Rights Day with a series of impactful awareness programs aimed at educating consumers about their rights and responsibilities. The department’s efforts spanned various districts across the region, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to consumer protection and fair trade practices.

The day’s celebrations were marked by a variety of interactive events, including seminars, road shows, and awareness camps. These activities were designed to engage the public and inform them about their rights under the Legal Metrology Act and Rules. Emphasizing the importance of consumer protection, the officers highlighted key aspects of the law, such as accurate measurements, fair transactions, and transparency in trade. These principles are vital in maintaining a level playing field in the marketplace and safeguarding consumers from exploitation.

One of the central focuses of the celebration was the importance of accurate measurements in ensuring fair trade. The department underscored the need for trustworthy weighing and measuring instruments, stressing that consumers should be confident that they are receiving the correct quantity for the price paid. Officers explained how the department monitors and enforces these standards, ensuring that businesses adhere to regulations that protect consumers.

Interactive sessions formed a core part of the awareness programs, offering consumers valuable insights into the mechanisms available for redressing grievances. These sessions highlighted how the department can assist individuals in resolving disputes related to unfair practices, such as incorrect measurements or deceptive trade practices. The awareness camps also aimed to make consumers aware of their duties, including checking receipts, ensuring product quality, and reporting any discrepancies or violations.

In addition to these educational initiatives, verification camps were set up in select districts to demonstrate the process of inspecting weighing and measuring instruments. These camps provided a hands-on experience, enabling consumers to witness firsthand the methods used by the department to verify the accuracy of tools used in commercial transactions. This initiative helped build trust and confidence among consumers, assuring them that their interests are being actively protected.

By combining consumer education, enforcement, and regular inspections, the Legal Metrology Department is dedicated to fostering a transparent and fair marketplace in Jammu and Kashmir. Its ongoing efforts aim to not only protect consumer rights but also to create a marketplace where both businesses and consumers can thrive, based on mutual trust and fairness.
