Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir: Construction of the Bant Bridge over the Tawi River at Toldi Nallah near Samroli in Udhampur district has commenced, bringing relief to residents of more than 20 villages who have faced connectivity challenges since devastating flash floods damaged the previous structure.

The project, estimated to cost ₹5.09 crore, is being funded under the Government of India’s Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. The approved tender value for the construction work stands at ₹4.80 crore.

Once completed, the bridge is expected to benefit more than 50,000 residents by restoring an important link to essential services, educational institutions, healthcare facilities and local markets.

Flash Floods Disrupted Connectivity in 2025

The earlier Bant Bridge was washed away by flash floods on August 26, 2025, severely affecting movement between several villages and nearby areas. The damage disrupted connectivity for more than 10 panchayats, creating difficulties for residents travelling for work, education, medical treatment and daily necessities.

In the absence of a functional bridge, people were forced to depend on alternative routes and, at times, undertake risky crossings of the river. The situation posed particular challenges for schoolchildren, daily commuters and people requiring urgent medical assistance.

The loss of this vital link highlighted the need for a durable replacement to improve public safety and restore normal movement across the affected areas.

Bridge Expected to Be Completed Within Six Months

Balwant Singh Mankotia, MLA from Chenani-Ghordi, said construction was progressing rapidly and expressed confidence that the bridge would be completed within the next five to six months.

The project is expected to provide a safer and more reliable crossing for residents while improving access to public services and reducing the difficulties caused by the prolonged disruption.

The commencement of construction marks an important step towards addressing the connectivity problems faced by communities in the region since the 2025 floods.

Boost for Rural Connectivity and Local Economy

Beyond improving transportation, the new Bant Bridge is expected to support economic activity by making it easier for residents to reach markets, transport goods and access employment opportunities. Improved connectivity could also help students and patients travel more conveniently to schools, colleges and healthcare facilities.

For the affected villages, the project represents a significant infrastructure development aimed at strengthening rural connectivity and improving everyday life.

As construction advances, residents will be looking forward to the timely completion of the bridge and the restoration of a dependable link across the Tawi River.
