Jan 10:

The 53rd edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair 2026 commenced today at Bharat Mandapam in the national capital, marking the beginning of a vibrant nine-day celebration of literature, culture, and knowledge exchange. Recognised as one of the largest literary gatherings in the country, the fair brings together publishers, authors, scholars, readers, and cultural voices from India and across the globe.

The prestigious event is set to witness participation from over one thousand publishers representing more than 35 countries, reaffirming India’s growing stature as a global hub for publishing and intellectual discourse. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is scheduled to inaugurate the fair, underscoring the government’s emphasis on reading culture, education, and knowledge dissemination.

This year’s theme, “Indian Military History: Valour and Wisdom @75,” pays tribute to the courage, strategic brilliance, and legacy of India’s armed forces since Independence. The Theme Pavilion, which stands as the main attraction of the fair, showcases over 500 books dedicated to military history, defence studies, biographies of war heroes, and strategic thought. In addition, more than 100 theme-based discussions, lectures, and interactive sessions are being organised, offering visitors deeper insights into India’s rich military heritage.

The World Book Fair 2026 features an extensive collection of books in English, Hindi, and several other Indian languages, reflecting the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Publications on art and culture, history, cinema, biographies, children’s literature, education, and national heritage are prominently displayed, catering to readers of all age groups and interests.

A major highlight of this edition is the Rashtriya e-Pustakalaya, a national digital library initiative that provides access to around 6,000 free eBooks. This digital platform represents a significant step towards blending traditional reading habits with modern technology, ensuring wider, inclusive, and affordable access to literature, especially for students and young readers.

The fair also places special emphasis on youth and emerging writers through dedicated programmes such as Author’s Connect, which enables direct interaction between readers and authors, and the Yuva Corner, designed to inspire young minds to engage with books and ideas. The Child Authors’ Corner is another notable feature, encouraging creativity and storytelling among children while nurturing the next generation of writers.

Beyond books, the event offers a rich cultural experience with panel discussions, book launches, literary debates, storytelling sessions, and cultural performances, making it a dynamic platform for intellectual and artistic exchange. These activities highlight the role of literature in shaping society, preserving heritage, and fostering dialogue in a rapidly changing world.

The New Delhi World Book Fair has long served as a bridge between authors and readers, tradition and innovation, print and digital media. The 2026 edition continues this legacy by celebrating the power of books as instruments of knowledge, inspiration, and national consciousness.

As the fair unfolds over the coming days, it is expected to attract thousands of visitors, reinforcing its position as a cornerstone of India’s literary calendar and a global meeting point for ideas, stories, and cultures.
