Newly-wedded couple among 4 killed; 3 injured in cloudburst, lightning

SRINAGAR/JAMMU, May 7: Four persons including a newly wedded couple were killed in cloudburst and lightning strike incidents at two different places in Kashmir today, while three villagers including a woman were injured as lightning hit Kuntwara area of Kishtwar today.

A senior police official said that there was a cloudburst incident at Bujbagh area of Pampore in Pulwama district this afternoon, resulting in the death of two persons- Hilal Ahmed Hanji, 25, and his wife Rozia Jan, 25.

In another incident, two persons died when lightning struck them at a high-altitude meadow land in Mujpathri area of Budgam district today. Click here to watch video

The deceased have been identified as Taja Begum, wife of Abdus Samad Chopan and Mohammad Sultan Chopan, son-in-law of Ghulam Mohammad Chopan of Gurwaith Kalan.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir was lashed by heavy rains today while hills had fresh snowfall leading to drop in temperatures across the region with Weatherman forecasting widespread moderate rain and thunderstorms in the region for next 24 hours.

Kashmir valley was lashed by heavy rains and there were hail-storms at few places and snowfall in the hills.

In many parts of Jammu, including Akhnoor, Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Ramban, Samba, Udhampur and Kathua besides some other areas heavy rain occurred this evening. Many parts of Jammu also witnessed strong hailstorm causing damage to the crops.

Reports from Kishtwar said that three villagers including a woman were injured as lightning struck Kuntwara area of Kishtwar today. Reports said Heena Begum, wife of Shabir Hussain, resident of Malie village was standing near her bathroom during thunder-storm and suddenly lightning struck her due to which she received grievous burn injuries in arm and shoulder.
