JUNE 03: The serene town of Tulmulla in Ganderbal district came alive with spiritual fervor and cultural unity as thousands of devotees congregated at the revered Mata Kheer Bhawani temple to observe the auspicious occasion of Jyeshta Ashtami. The day, which holds great significance in the Hindu calendar, was marked by prayers, rituals, and a vibrant display of faith and devotion.
From the early hours of the morning, devotees—many of whom traveled long distances—began arriving at the sacred site, considered one of the most important pilgrimage centers for Kashmiri Hindus. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Ragnya Devi, popularly known as Kheer Bhawani, is nestled under centuries-old Chinar trees, beside a sacred spring whose waters are believed to change colors as an omen.
Pilgrims offered traditional milk and rice pudding (kheer) to the deity, seeking blessings for peace, prosperity, and spiritual well-being. Amid the chanting of hymns and the rhythmic beats of devotional music, the temple premises radiated an atmosphere of deep reverence and cultural harmony.
Local Muslim residents, as is customary, extended warm hospitality and support to the visiting pilgrims—a testament to the enduring spirit of communal harmony that defines the region. Security arrangements and logistical support were well-managed by the local administration, ensuring a smooth and peaceful celebration for all.
Jyeshta Ashtami at Kheer Bhawani is more than just a religious event; it symbolizes the deep-rooted spiritual heritage and the resilient cultural bonds of the Kashmiri community. For many devotees, the pilgrimage is also a journey of emotional significance, especially for those who were displaced during the turmoil in the valley decades ago.
The sight of thousands bowing in unison, sharing offerings, and embracing each other in warmth and prayer showcased not just a religious gathering—but a powerful affirmation of unity, peace, and shared identity in the heart of Kashmir.
As the day drew to a close, the chants continued to echo through the Chinar groves, carrying with them hopes for harmony and a future woven together by mutual respect and faith.
