3 Aug: In a significant move to boost India’s digital transformation and industrial self-reliance, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) have entered into a landmark partnership. The MoU, signed during the Industry 4.0 Workshop for CPSEs in Guwahati, aims to implement India’s first 5G Captive Non-Public Network (CNPN) within the refinery sector—marking a bold step into the future of secure and smart industrial operations.
This strategic collaboration is more than a technology upgrade; it’s a statement of intent. With Industry 4.0 technologies like IoT, Digital Twins, AR/VR, Big Data Analytics, and AI-driven 3D Printing set to redefine manufacturing landscapes globally, India is placing itself squarely on the map. And BSNL, with its vast experience in telecom infrastructure, is taking the lead in powering this transition in public sector industries.
The deployment of 5G CNPN at NRL will bring real-time data connectivity, better cybersecurity, and higher operational efficiency—essentials for mission-critical environments like oil refineries. What sets this apart is the use of indigenous 5G infrastructure, aligning perfectly with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
This move has also drawn attention to the Government’s Whole of Government (WoG) approach, where public sector collaboration is becoming central to national progress. It ensures that innovation isn’t isolated within private enterprises but becomes a tool for public good—especially in regions like the North East, which often lag behind in digital adoption.
CMDs of both NRL and BSNL have rightly emphasized that this partnership isn’t just about high-speed networks; it’s about skilling, employment generation, and future-ready industries. From AR-based worker training to real-time operational insights through digital twins, this partnership offers a glimpse into the future of Indian industry.
In conclusion, the BSNL-NRL MoU is not just a technological leap—it is a policy success story, a regional development catalyst, and a national vision in action. It paves the way for scalable, replicable models across India’s industrial base—setting the tone for a digitally intelligent, self-reliant Bharat.
