OCT 1:The Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) celebrated its 25th Raising Day on October 1, 2025, marking a quarter century of dedicated service since its establishment in 2001. Formed as a permanent institution to promote jointness and integration in the Armed Forces, HQ IDS has become the cornerstone of tri-service synergy and a vanguard in emerging domains such as cyber, artificial intelligence, and space.
Over the past two and a half decades, HQ IDS has spearheaded the development of joint military structures, enabling greater coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It has also played a pivotal role in advancing integrated theatre commands, capability development, and indigenous defence solutions in line with the government’s vision of Atmanirbharta in defence.
The institution has been instrumental in hosting the Combined Commanders’ Conference (CCC), facilitating dialogue between the highest military and civilian leadership, and coordinating Joint Staff Talks with friendly nations. Through active participation in bilateral and multilateral frameworks, HQ IDS has significantly expanded India’s footprint in global defence cooperation.
Recognising its role beyond conventional warfare, HQ IDS has consistently prioritised Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations. Its coordinated approach has enhanced national disaster response mechanisms, while initiatives like the Combined Operational Review and Evaluation (CORE) Programme have modernised training and education across services.
In 2025, HQ IDS further strengthened India’s preparedness in emerging technologies by engaging with scientific institutions, industry partners, and research organisations to accelerate the adoption of AI, cyber security solutions, and space applications in military operations.
Looking ahead, HQ IDS has laid out a roadmap to deepen integration by refining joint operational doctrines, institutionalising advanced training systems, and strengthening India’s participation in multilateral security cooperation frameworks.
On its 25th Raising Day, HQ IDS paid tribute to the dedication and professionalism of its personnel, past and present. Conceived to ensure unified planning, force structuring, and capability development, HQ IDS continues to enhance the operational effectiveness of the Indian Armed Forces, remaining central to India’s defence preparedness in a rapidly evolving security environment.
