Feb 5: Marking World Cancer Day, the Chief Minister today addressed a special event organised at Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu, reiterating the government’s firm commitment to enhancing cancer care services and strengthening the healthcare ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to doctors, healthcare professionals, patients, and students, the Chief Minister underlined that cancer care remains a top priority for the administration. He stressed that ensuring timely diagnosis, advanced treatment facilities, and compassionate care for cancer patients is essential to building a resilient and inclusive healthcare system.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s proactive role in upgrading medical infrastructure, expanding oncology services, and equipping hospitals with modern diagnostic and treatment technologies. He said continuous investments are being made to improve facilities not only for patients but also to support doctors and healthcare workers who form the backbone of the medical system.
Emphasising the importance of a strong healthcare safety net, the Chief Minister said that quality healthcare should be accessible to every citizen, regardless of socio-economic background. He added that early detection, public awareness, and preventive healthcare play a crucial role in reducing the burden of cancer and improving survival rates.
The event at GMC Jammu also focused on raising awareness about cancer prevention, lifestyle changes, and the importance of regular screenings. Medical experts present on the occasion shared insights on advancements in cancer treatment and the need for community-level outreach to encourage early reporting of symptoms.
Reaffirming the government’s long-term vision, the Chief Minister said that strengthening tertiary care institutions, enhancing human resources in healthcare, and improving referral systems will significantly benefit cancer patients across the Union Territory. He assured that the administration will continue to work closely with medical institutions to ensure the highest standards of patient care, safety, and dignity.
World Cancer Day, observed globally, serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to fight cancer through awareness, prevention, early detection, and effective treatment. The Chief Minister called upon all stakeholders, including healthcare professionals, civil society, and citizens, to contribute towards building a healthier and more informed society.
