February 24: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the extension of the existing North-South corridor of Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRC) from GIFT City to Shahpur.
The approved extension will span 3.33 kilometres and include three elevated metro stations. The project is scheduled for completion within approximately four years and carries an estimated cost of ₹1,067.35 crore.
Strengthening Ahmedabad–GIFT Connectivity
The new corridor is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Ahmedabad and GIFT City, two major economic and business hubs in Gujarat. The extension will benefit multinational companies, educational institutions, and commercial establishments located along the route.
According to official estimates, the extended corridor is projected to serve around 23,702 passengers daily by 2029, increasing to approximately 58,059 passengers by 2041.
The improved metro connectivity will cater to daily commuters travelling between Ahmedabad and the GIFT region for business, employment, and education purposes. Officials stated that the extension will significantly improve network integration and passenger convenience.
Employment Generation and Economic Boost
The project is expected to generate around 1,000 jobs during the construction phase. Post-construction, approximately 250 personnel will be employed for operations and maintenance. In addition to direct employment, the project is likely to create substantial indirect job opportunities through allied activities.
GMRC, a 50:50 joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Gujarat, will implement the project.
Background: Expanding Gujarat Metro Network
The Gujarat Metro network has witnessed rapid expansion in recent years. The 68.28-km Ahmedabad Metro Phase-I corridor, connecting APMC to Motera Stadium (North-South Corridor) and Thaltej Gam to Vastral Gam (East-West Corridor), became operational in September 2022.
Phase-II, extending from Motera Stadium to Mahatma Mandir and GNLU to GIFT City, was made operational in January 2026. Together, the two phases cover 53 stations and currently record an average daily ridership of approximately 1.6 lakh passengers.
With the latest approval, the Centre has reinforced its commitment to strengthening urban transport infrastructure, easing traffic congestion, promoting sustainable mobility, and supporting economic growth in Gujarat’s key urban corridors.
