21 April: The Election Commission of India has announced that campaigning for the upcoming elections in Tamil Nadu must conclude by 6 PM, in accordance with established electoral guidelines.
The directive has been issued to ensure a fair and transparent election process, allowing voters a quiet period before polling begins. The restriction applies to all forms of campaigning, including public rallies, roadshows, and media outreach by political parties and candidates.
As per the norms laid down by the Election Commission, the campaign silence period—commonly referred to as the “48-hour silence period”—is enforced to give voters sufficient time to reflect and make informed decisions without external influence. During this period, any form of political प्रचार is strictly prohibited.
Officials have emphasized that strict monitoring mechanisms are in place to ensure compliance with the deadline. Surveillance teams and flying squads have been deployed across various districts to prevent violations of the Model Code of Conduct.
Political parties and candidates have been advised to adhere to the guidelines and avoid any activities that could disrupt the electoral process. Violations of the rules may attract legal action and penalties, as per election laws.
The Commission has also urged voters to actively participate in the democratic process and exercise their franchise responsibly. Authorities have made arrangements to facilitate smooth polling, including security measures and voter awareness initiatives.
The announcement comes as election preparations in Tamil Nadu enter their final phase, with administrative machinery working to ensure free, fair, and peaceful polls. The enforcement of the 6 PM campaign deadline is a crucial step in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
