21 June: CHENNAI: A tragic ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing factory in Tamil Nadu claimed the lives of seven people and affected around 70 others, prompting a large-scale emergency response by local authorities and disaster management teams.
According to officials, the incident occurred when ammonia gas reportedly leaked from a refrigeration unit within the factory premises. The gas quickly spread through parts of the facility, exposing workers and nearby individuals to toxic fumes. Several people complained of breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and other health-related issues following the leak.
Emergency services rushed to the site soon after the incident was reported. Rescue teams, firefighters, medical personnel, and local authorities launched immediate evacuation and relief operations to prevent further casualties. Those affected were shifted to nearby hospitals, where many received treatment for respiratory distress and exposure-related symptoms.
Officials confirmed that seven people lost their lives in the incident, while dozens of others were admitted to healthcare facilities for observation and treatment. Medical teams have been monitoring the condition of the injured, and authorities stated that most affected individuals are receiving the necessary care.
The district administration initiated an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the gas leak. Preliminary investigations are focusing on the condition of the refrigeration system, safety protocols at the facility, and whether standard operating procedures were being followed at the time of the incident.
Authorities have also directed relevant departments to conduct inspections and assess potential safety lapses. Environmental and industrial safety experts are expected to examine the site to identify factors that contributed to the accident and recommend preventive measures.
Ammonia is widely used in industrial refrigeration systems, particularly in food processing and cold storage facilities. However, exposure to high concentrations can pose serious health risks, making proper handling, maintenance, and monitoring essential for worker safety.
Officials expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured that all necessary support would be provided to the affected families. Compensation and relief measures are also expected to be announced in accordance with applicable regulations.
Labour safety advocates have stressed the need for regular audits, employee training, and strict compliance with industrial safety standards. They noted that industrial accidents can often be minimized through preventive maintenance and effective emergency preparedness systems.
Residents in the surrounding area were advised not to panic, as authorities stated that the situation had been brought under control. Air quality monitoring and safety assessments were carried out to ensure there was no continuing threat to public health.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of workplace safety and the need for robust monitoring mechanisms in industrial establishments handling hazardous substances. Experts believe that lessons learned from the tragedy should be used to strengthen safety practices across the sector.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on supporting the affected families, ensuring medical care for those injured, and determining the circumstances that led to the deadly gas leak.
