Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed concern over the growing drug trade, gangsterism and organised crime in Punjab, raising questions about public safety and the law-and-order situation following two incidents in the state. He said the Centre would seek responses from the Punjab government regarding the cases and called for decisive action against drug networks

Centre to Seek Report on Two Incidents

In a statement issued on October 16, 2026, Shah referred to the death of Gulzar Singh in Dirba, Sangrur district, and the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa.

According to reports, Gulzar Singh died by suicide on September 7 after his family alleged that he faced harassment and caste-based remarks following his questioning of Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema about the alleged local drug supply. These allegations have been reported by the family and have not been independently established here.

Jhota, who had spoken out against the alleged sale of addictive drugs, was shot dead in Mansa. The medical store owner accused in the shooting was subsequently arrested, according to the report.

Shah said the Ministry of Home Affairs would seek responses from the Punjab government on the incidents, stressing the need to address concerns over public safety and accountability.

Shah Calls for Crackdown on Drug Networks

Addressing Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Home Minister said people wanted concrete results rather than announcements. He called for a decisive crackdown on drug trafficking networks and an impartial investigation into any alleged political patronage extended to criminals.

Shah also emphasised the need to protect young people from drug abuse, take strict action against those involved in criminal activities and ensure that citizens can raise their voices against drugs without fear.

He reiterated his commitment to working towards a drug-free and gangster-free Punjab, stating that safeguarding the future of the state’s youth must remain a priority.

Drug Menace Becomes a Major Political Issue

The issue of drug trafficking and organised crime has intensified political debate in Punjab ahead of the state Assembly elections expected in 2027. Shah’s remarks have added to the growing exchanges between the BJP-led Centre and the Aam Aadmi Party government over responsibility for tackling narcotics and maintaining law and order.

The developments have also renewed attention on the need for coordinated enforcement, effective investigations and accountability in cases involving allegations of drug trafficking and threats against anti-drug activists.

The Centre’s proposed intervention places the focus on the Punjab government’s response to the incidents and the steps required to strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.
