JUNE 05: In a major step toward promoting eco-friendly transport and sustainable urban development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off a fleet of electric buses in New Delhi. The initiative, launched in partnership with the Delhi Government, aims to enhance public transportation while significantly reducing environmental impact.
The flag-off ceremony took place on June 5, 2025—coinciding with World Environment Day—underscoring the government’s commitment to cleaner cities and a greener future. The electric buses are part of a broader national and regional strategy to adopt green mobility solutions, cut down on carbon emissions, and improve air quality in metropolitan areas.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Modi said that the electric bus rollout is not just a step toward sustainable transport but also a meaningful contribution to creating a clean and green Delhi. He added that the new fleet would enhance the quality of life for citizens by providing quieter, cleaner, and more efficient public transport options.
“This initiative aligns with our long-term vision for a sustainable India. It will make daily commutes more comfortable while helping us meet our environmental goals,” the Prime Minister stated.
He also took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), sharing:
“Building a clean and green Delhi! Flagged off Electric Buses under an initiative of the Delhi Government aimed at boosting sustainable development and clean urban mobility. Additionally, this will also improve ‘Ease of Living’ for the people of Delhi.”
The electric buses are equipped with modern technology, including GPS tracking, real-time passenger updates, and zero-emission engines. Authorities noted that the new fleet would contribute significantly to curbing air pollution in the capital, a city that has frequently topped charts for poor air quality.
Delhi government officials present at the launch expressed optimism that the new electric buses will reshape public transportation by making it more environment-friendly and people-centric. The move also supports broader goals under the National Electric Mobility Mission and Smart Cities initiatives.
With the launch, Delhi joins a growing list of Indian cities making the transition to electric public transport as part of the national agenda to combat climate change and urban congestion. Citizens and environmental advocates have welcomed the development as a critical milestone in India’s journey toward sustainable urban living.
