OCT 20:The Cultural Wing of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), in collaboration with Karam Buland Folk Theatre Handgun and Kashmir Bhagat Theatre Akingam, organized a vibrant cultural programme titled “Youmi Mohd Subhan Baghat” at the Open Air Theatre, Akingam, Anantnag. The event was held to commemorate the 32nd death anniversary of the legendary Kashmiri folk artist Mohammad Subhan Baghat, a pioneer in the traditional performing art form Bhaand Pather.
Mohammad Subhan Baghat, fondly remembered as a torchbearer of Kashmiri folk theatre, dedicated his life to reviving and preserving the art of Bhaand Pather—a traditional form of satirical folk drama deeply rooted in Kashmir’s cultural identity. Known for his sharp wit, comic brilliance, and socially relevant performances, Baghat’s legacy continues to inspire generations of artists and cultural enthusiasts across Jammu and Kashmir.
The commemoration event featured a series of captivating folk performances, including Bach Nagma, Rouf, Band Pather, and Shahnievadan, presented by talented artists from different parts of Kashmir. The performances not only celebrated the diversity of Kashmiri folk traditions but also reflected the enduring influence of Baghat’s artistic vision in promoting cultural unity and social awareness through theatre.
Speakers at the event paid heartfelt tributes to the late artist, recalling his immense contribution to folk theatre and his role in keeping the traditional art forms alive amid changing times. They praised the Cultural Wing of DIPR and its partner organizations for organizing such meaningful cultural commemorations that honor Kashmir’s artistic heritage and encourage young performers to uphold their roots.
Local residents, artists, and participants expressed deep appreciation to the organizers for recognizing and celebrating the invaluable legacy of Mohammad Subhan Baghat.
