OCT 03:In a significant step towards youth empowerment and employment generation, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has launched the PM Internship Scheme, a flagship initiative aimed at bridging the skill gap and enhancing job readiness among young Indians. The scheme, also referred to as the PM Internship Yojana, is designed to offer 12-month internships to 1.25 lakh youth between the ages of 21 and 24 years.
The focus is on providing opportunities to youngsters from low-income households, ensuring that financial limitations do not hinder access to quality skill development and career-building experiences. Under the scheme, participants will be placed in India’s top 500 companies, exposing them to real-world corporate environments, professional practices, and hands-on industry learning.
The pilot phase of the programme has been rolled out with the twin objectives of addressing the skill gap in the workforce and boosting employment opportunities for fresh graduates and aspiring professionals. By engaging directly with leading companies, the interns will not only gain practical knowledge but also improve their chances of securing long-term employment in competitive sectors.
Finance Minister Sitharaman emphasized that the scheme reflects the government’s broader commitment to inclusive growth, economic empowerment, and workforce readiness. The initiative is expected to align with India’s vision of becoming a global skills hub, while simultaneously enabling the country’s youth to actively contribute to nation-building.
Industry leaders have welcomed the move, highlighting that it will create a win-win situation: companies will gain access to enthusiastic, trainable talent, while young people will gain exposure and skills crucial for their career progression.
By targeting youth from underprivileged backgrounds, the scheme is also seen as a step towards social equity and empowerment, ensuring that opportunities for growth and employment are not limited by economic barriers.
The PM Internship Scheme is poised to become a transformative platform that strengthens the link between education, skills, and employment, ultimately contributing to a stronger, more inclusive, and future-ready workforce for India.
