JUNE 24: In a major push towards self-reliant and sustainable energy solutions, the Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, has extended financial support to Gurugram-based M/s BatX Energies Pvt. Ltd. The support is aimed at commercializing an indigenous battery recycling technology through the project titled “Technologies for Generation of Battery Grade Materials and Value Addition through Closed Loop.”
This initiative focuses on establishing a robust and eco-friendly recycling system for end-of-life lithium-ion batteries, helping extract critical battery-grade materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. BatX has developed a unique low-temperature, low-pressure hydrometallurgical process that is compatible with various lithium-ion chemistries. The technology boasts a high recovery efficiency of up to 97–99%, using dual-mode (wet and dry) black mass recovery.
The company’s end-to-end process—ranging from battery collection and shredding to metal leaching and purification—is completely indigenous and patented. This eliminates the need for imported recycling machinery and aligns with India’s broader vision of reducing dependency on critical mineral imports by maximizing reuse of domestically available resources.
With TDB’s support, BatX Energies will expand its operations from pilot scale to full-fledged commercial capacity. This project not only contributes to India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission but also reinforces circular economy principles and energy security. The output compounds, including lithium carbonate and cobalt sulphate, meet global standards and will serve both domestic and international markets.
Commenting on the partnership, Shri Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary, TDB, stated that developing a strong indigenous recycling infrastructure is essential to support India’s transition to electric mobility and renewable energy. He emphasized that such innovation boosts the country’s clean energy supply chain and strategic mineral independence.
Utkarsh Singh, Co-Founder & CEO of BatX Energies, called the support from TDB a “game-changer,” stating that it validates BatX’s clean-tech innovation and its potential to lead globally in sustainable battery recycling.
With seven patents (including two granted) and fully in-house technology development, BatX is poised to play a key role in advancing India’s capabilities in battery material recovery and clean energy infrastructure.
