Leh, September 25, 2026: In a significant move to strengthen higher and technical education in Ladakh, IIT Jammu will establish a Satellite Campus in Leh under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the UT Administration of Ladakh and the Indian Institute of Technology Jammu.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, who described the initiative as a “historic and transformational moment” for the region’s youth.
The agreement was formally signed by Prof Manoj Singh Gaur, Director, IIT Jammu, and Bhanu Prabha, Secretary, Higher Education Department, UT Ladakh.
IIT Jammu Campus to Expand Access for Ladakhi Students
The initiative is aimed at addressing longstanding challenges faced by students from Ladakh in accessing quality technical and higher education.
For years, students from the remote and high-altitude region have had to travel long distances outside Ladakh to pursue professional and technical courses at reputed institutions. The proposed IIT Jammu presence in Leh is expected to bring greater access to advanced education closer to their homes.
Under the initial phase of the MoU, around 40 students from Ladakh will pursue courses at the IIT Jammu campus from the July-August 2026 academic session.
The collaboration is also expected to create opportunities in areas including research, innovation, entrepreneurship, employment and skill development.
Temporary Satellite Campus Planned at Government Polytechnic College
As part of the next phase, a temporary IIT Jammu Satellite Campus will be established at Government Polytechnic College in Leh. The facility will support academic activities within Ladakh while the longer-term infrastructure is developed.
The agreement also envisages the development of a full-fledged residential engineering campus in Kargil in the future.
The phased approach is intended to gradually expand IIT Jammu’s academic presence in the Union Territory and create a stronger ecosystem for technical education, research and innovation.
Focus on Research, Startups and Innovation
Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony, LG Vinai Kumar Saxena said the collaboration would open access to world-class technical education for students from Ladakh’s remote and high-altitude areas.
He said the initiative could help reduce the educational challenges that have affected local families for decades while creating new pathways for young people to pursue academic and professional ambitions closer to home.
The collaboration is also expected to facilitate faculty exchange, research partnerships, startup incubation, innovation centres and skill-development initiatives.
Saxena expressed appreciation to IIT Jammu for extending its academic capabilities and vision to Ladakh. He also acknowledged the support of the Government of India for initiatives aimed at strengthening opportunities in remote and border regions.

The proposed IIT Jammu Satellite Campus represents a phased effort to expand technical education infrastructure across Ladakh. From initial student enrolment and academic activities in Leh to the proposed residential engineering campus in Kargil, the initiative is designed to create a broader higher-education ecosystem within the Union Territory.
