NOV 12: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Jhpiego, has convened a three-day National Consultation and Experience-Sharing Workshop on nursing policy priorities and best practices. The initiative aims to strengthen policy dialogue, review ongoing reforms, and enhance the nursing and midwifery ecosystem across India.
The workshop brings together policymakers, regulators, educators, and development partners to deliberate on nursing governance, workforce management, and education reforms aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava emphasized that nurses and midwives are the backbone of India’s healthcare system and play a crucial role in achieving Universal Health Coverage. She noted the government’s key reforms, including the establishment of the National Nursing and Midwifery Commission (NNMC) and adoption of competency-based curricula, as major milestones in professionalizing nursing education.
Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, credited India’s quality healthcare delivery to the commitment of its nursing workforce. He called for stronger in-service training, skill enhancement, and quality assurance to maintain high professional standards.
Dr. Payden, WHO Representative to India, lauded India’s leadership in global nursing, noting that the country is now one of the largest contributors to the international nursing workforce.
The workshop features technical sessions, policy discussions, and state-level presentations aimed at fostering innovation, capacity-building, and evidence-based reforms in nursing education and practice nationwide.
