AUG 30: At the 17th CII Global MedTech Summit 2025 in New Delhi, Union Pharmaceuticals Secretary Shri Amit Agrawal emphasized that India is fast emerging as a global hub for affordable, high-quality and innovative medical technologies, backed by strong government policy support and an increasingly competitive industry.
Speaking at the summit’s opening plenary, themed “Innovating for a Healthier Future – Advancing MedTech for Global Impact: Make in India, Make for the World”, Shri Agrawal highlighted that with its vast population and rapidly expanding economy, India’s demand for cost-effective healthcare solutions will continue to grow at a sustained double-digit pace. He stressed that the MedTech sector must remain focused on patient-centric innovation, creating devices that serve both domestic and international markets.
The Secretary noted that post-COVID India has crossed a remarkable milestone—achieving local manufacturing of advanced medical equipment such as MRI and CT scanners, mammography machines, ventilators, stents, heart valves, dialysis systems, and implant devices. “What once seemed impossible a decade ago is now a reality, showcasing India’s innovation-driven capabilities,” he remarked.
On policy support, Shri Agrawal underlined the upcoming three medical device parks, ongoing infrastructure upgrades, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Medical Devices as critical steps accelerating sectoral growth. He further announced the ₹5,000 crore Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma MedTech Sector (PRIP) Scheme, aimed at deepening domestic value chains, encouraging backward integration, and enhancing competitiveness.
He urged innovators, entrepreneurs, and investors to collaborate in transforming new ideas into market-ready solutions, thereby strengthening India’s position in the global healthcare landscape. “Countries now view India not only as a market, but as a leader in healthcare innovation,” he said, while calling for stronger industry-government partnerships.
Shri Agrawal also emphasized the sector’s potential to generate millions of jobs, expand exports, and ensure affordable healthcare access across the Global South and North. With continued reforms, trade agreements, and innovation-focused policies, India’s MedTech industry is set to play a pivotal role in the nation’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
