ndian Air Force achieves historic high-altitude landing at Nyoma airfield, strengthening strategic airlift capabilities in eastern Ladakh
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has achieved a significant milestone in high-altitude aviation by successfully landing its IL-76MD heavy transport aircraft at Nyoma airfield in eastern Ladakh at an altitude of 13,629 feet. The achievement marks a major advancement in India’s strategic airlift capabilities and highlights the operational expertise of the IAF in challenging mountainous terrain.
Located in eastern Ladakh, close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, Nyoma airfield holds considerable strategic importance for India’s defence preparedness. The successful landing demonstrates the Indian Air Force’s ability to operate large transport aircraft in some of the world’s most demanding geographical and atmospheric conditions.
Thin Air Makes High-Altitude Landing Challenging
Operating a heavy transport aircraft at such an elevation presents significant technical and operational challenges. At high altitudes, reduced air density affects engine thrust and the lift generated by aircraft wings. These conditions make take-offs and landings more demanding, requiring precise calculations, extensive preparation and exceptional flying skills.
The IL-76MD, a Russian-origin, four-engine strategic transport aircraft, is an important component of the Indian Air Force’s heavy-lift fleet. The aircraft is designed to transport military personnel, vehicles, equipment and essential supplies over long distances. It can carry substantial cargo loads, making it particularly valuable for supporting military operations in remote regions.
Nyoma Airfield Strengthens India’s Defence Infrastructure
Nyoma airfield has emerged as an important addition to India’s military infrastructure along the northern frontier. Located approximately 25 kilometres from the LAC with China, the airbase is strategically positioned to support military operations in eastern Ladakh.
The airfield was inaugurated as a full-fledged airbase in November 2025, when then Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh landed a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft there.
Its upgraded infrastructure, including a paved runway capable of accommodating fighter aircraft, transport planes and helicopters, is expected to improve connectivity with forward areas.
The successful landing of the IL-76MD further demonstrates the growing operational potential of the facility.
Boost to Strategic Airlift Capabilities
The latest achievement is expected to strengthen India’s ability to move troops, military equipment and essential supplies to strategically important locations in the Himalayan region.
In areas where difficult terrain, extreme weather and limited road connectivity can affect transportation, heavy-lift aircraft provide an important alternative for military logistics.
The IAF’s latest accomplishment highlights India’s expanding high-altitude aviation capabilities and the professionalism of its personnel.
By successfully landing the IL-76MD at Nyoma, the Indian Air Force has added a significant milestone to the country’s aviation history while reinforcing its ability to operate in challenging Himalayan conditions.
