JUNE 17: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, inaugurated its Summer Internship Programme (SIP) 2025 on 16th June 2025 at its New Delhi headquarters. This four-week programme is designed to cultivate awareness and understanding of human rights issues among university students across disciplines.

Out of 1,468 applicants, 80 students were selected, representing 42 academic institutions from 20 States and Union Territories. This year’s diverse batch includes students pursuing Law, Social Sciences, Psychology, Social Work, Journalism, Gender Studies, Digital Humanities, and International Relations.

In his inaugural address, Justice Shri V. Ramasubramanian, Chairperson of NHRC, India, praised the diversity and energy of the selected interns. He spoke about the importance of peer learning, drawing analogies from family life and emphasizing that knowledge should serve a meaningful purpose. He urged students to act as champions of justice, empathy, and equality, working toward a society where equal rights and opportunities are truly universal.

Delivering the keynote, NHRC Secretary General Shri Bharat Lal underlined the significant role of youth in shaping a society based on human dignity and responsibility. He stressed the importance of being sensitive, compassionate, and purposeful in addressing societal challenges. Highlighting India’s civilizational ethos, he called on the interns to embrace a balanced perspective—one that upholds both rights and responsibilities—and strive for inclusive development and social justice.

Providing an overview of the programme, NHRC Joint Secretary Shri Samir Kumar outlined various components including interactive sessions, group research projects, book reviews, declamation contests, and field visits. These visits—to NGOs, police stations, prisons, shelter homes, and other national commissions—aim to provide interns with a first-hand understanding of the human rights landscape in India.

Lt. Col. Virender Singh, Director at NHRC, extended the vote of thanks, expressing hope that the interns would emerge from the programme not just more informed but more inspired to drive social change.

The SIP 2025 reflects NHRC’s continued commitment to nurturing future advocates of human rights, equity, and democratic values in India.
