MAY 07: In a decisive operation aimed at enforcing environmental laws, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) on Monday evening confiscated nearly 40 metric tonnes (40,000 kg) of suspected banned polythene from a warehouse located on Rajiv Nagar Road, in the Narwal area of Jammu.

The raid was spearheaded by JMC Commissioner Devansh Yadav, who was personally present at the site along with a dedicated team of municipal staff. The team discovered a truck fully loaded with polythene parked at the warehouse, while a large quantity of similar material was also found stored within the premises. In addition, a substantial cache of gutka packets, a banned tobacco product, was also seized during the inspection.

Due to the sheer volume of material involved, the team called in police and administrative officials to assist in securing the site and conducting a detailed inspection. Officials meticulously checked registers and equipment found on-site to gather evidence related to the origin, ownership, and distribution network of the banned materials.

Commissioner Yadav stated that, based on initial observations, the seized polythene appears to be single-use plastic, which is prohibited under current environmental regulations. However, he added that the final confirmation would depend on lab tests to be conducted by the Pollution Control Committee.

“Though the material looks like single-use plastic, we are sending it for lab analysis to confirm its composition,” said Yadav.

He further revealed that individuals present at the warehouse fled upon seeing the JMC team, and an investigation has been launched to track down those responsible for storing and potentially distributing the contraband.

“The police will determine who owns the warehouse and who was intended to receive the polythene. We are committed to taking strict legal action against all involved,” he affirmed.

This significant seizure highlights the JMC’s active enforcement of the plastic ban, reflecting its broader commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices within the city. Authorities have pledged continued vigilance and stricter monitoring to prevent such violations in the future.
