JUNE 24: Minister Javed Dar inaugurated the much-anticipated macadamization work at the Fruit and Vegetable Mandi in Sopore, marking a significant step towards improving the region’s horticultural infrastructure. The project, estimated at a cost of ₹200.24 lakhs, is a vital initiative aimed at upgrading essential market facilities to support the growing trade in fruits and vegetables in North Kashmir.

During the inauguration ceremony, the Minister emphasized the importance of modern infrastructure in boosting agricultural and horticultural productivity. He stated that the project will not only improve road conditions within the mandi but also facilitate smoother transportation and handling of perishable goods, ultimately benefiting growers, traders, and consumers alike.

The Fruit and Vegetable Mandi in Sopore is one of the largest and busiest agri-markets in Jammu and Kashmir, serving as a commercial hub for horticultural produce, especially apples. The new macadamized surface will significantly reduce logistics challenges, ensure cleaner surroundings, and enhance efficiency in daily mandi operations.

Minister Dar also interacted with traders and growers, assuring them of the government’s continued focus on strengthening horticulture-based infrastructure across the region. He highlighted that the administration is committed to ensuring that the needs of farmers and market stakeholders are addressed on priority.

He added that better market access and improved facilities are crucial for the economic empowerment of farmers and will play a central role in the larger goal of rural development. The Minister called upon all stakeholders to work in coordination for timely completion of the project and maintenance of the upgraded infrastructure.

The initiative is expected to create ripple effects across the horticulture supply chain in Sopore and adjoining areas, enabling better price realization for farmers and improved market efficiency.

This project stands as a testament to the government’s strategic efforts to modernize agri-marketing systems in Jammu and Kashmir, with a vision to make the region a model for horticultural growth and sustainability.
