The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has issued an advisory for Indian travellers visiting Maldives, cautioning them about the country’s stringent anti-narcotics laws and the severe penalties associated with violations.

The advisory comes in light of updated regulations and stricter enforcement measures in the Maldives aimed at combating drug-related offences. The NCB has urged travellers to exercise extreme caution and ensure full compliance with local laws while visiting the island nation.

According to officials, possession, consumption, or trafficking of narcotic substances in the Maldives can lead to harsh legal consequences, including heavy fines and long-term imprisonment. Even small quantities of prohibited substances can attract strict penalties under Maldivian law.

The NCB has advised travellers to avoid carrying any banned substances and to be aware of the regulations governing prescription medications as well. Visitors are encouraged to carry valid medical documentation for any prescribed drugs to prevent misunderstandings during inspections.

The advisory also highlights the importance of being vigilant about personal belongings and avoiding situations where individuals may unknowingly come into contact with illegal substances. Travellers have been urged to follow guidelines issued by authorities and respect the laws of the host country.

Officials emphasized that awareness is key to ensuring a safe and hassle-free travel experience. The NCB has reiterated that ignorance of local laws will not be considered a valid defence in case of violations.

The move is part of a broader effort to protect Indian citizens abroad and ensure they are informed about legal frameworks in foreign countries. It also reflects the government’s commitment to preventing drug-related offences and promoting responsible travel.

With the Maldives being a popular destination among Indian tourists, the advisory serves as an important reminder to prioritise safety, legality, and responsible conduct while travelling internationally.
