MAY 18: Operation SINDOOR, launched on May 7, 2025, was a decisive and coordinated response by India’s tri-services following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. The operation targeted nine major terror camps across the Line of Control and inside Pakistan, relying on precise intelligence and careful planning to minimize civilian casualties and uphold operational ethics.
In retaliation, Pakistan launched drone and UAV attacks on key Indian airbases and logistics hubs. However, these attempts were thwarted by India’s layered air defense system, led by the Integrated Command and Control Strategy (ICCS), which enabled real-time threat detection and interception. This success reflected seamless coordination among the Army, Air Force, Navy, government agencies, and departments.
The operation showcased a true joint effort: the Indian Air Force (IAF) executed precision airstrikes on terror infrastructure, including Nur Khan and Rahimyar Khan Air Bases, while maintaining a robust air defense shield using indigenous systems like the Akash missile and legacy platforms such as Pechora. The Indian Army supported these efforts with its air defense units and countered infiltration attempts, notably a foiled incursion in Samba by the Border Security Force (BSF). The Indian Navy asserted maritime dominance with its Carrier Battle Group, conducting surveillance and air defense missions along the western seaboard, effectively containing threats from the sea.
Beyond the battlefield, India’s unified military framework has been strengthened by several reforms. The creation of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and the Department of Military Affairs (DMA) promotes jointness in planning, training, and operations across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Integrated Theatre Commands (ITCs) and Joint Logistic Nodes further enhance operational synergy and resource optimization.
Legislative reforms such as the Inter-Services Organisations Act, 2023, empower commanders to unify command and control across services, speeding decision-making and fostering a joint culture. Training initiatives and multi-domain exercises like Prachand Prahar and Desert Hunt reinforce interoperability and preparedness.
Technological advancements underpinning operations like SINDOOR include the Defence Communication Network and the Integrated Air Command and Control System, facilitating real-time coordination and network-centric warfare.
Designated the ‘Year of Defence Reforms’ in 2025, India continues to prioritize jointness, integration, and modernization to build a combat-ready force capable of addressing evolving security challenges.
Operation SINDOOR stands as a testament to India’s strategic resolve, showcasing precise, integrated military action that sends a clear message: India is prepared to defend its sovereignty with unity, strength, and advanced capabilities across all domains.
