December 12: Jammu and Kashmir Transport Minister Satish Sharma on Thursday underscored the pivotal role of the transport sector in strengthening the region’s economy and assured time-bound action on long-pending issues faced by transporters across the Union Territory.
The Minister was interacting with representatives of various Transport Welfare Associations during a high-level meeting convened to discuss challenges affecting the transport fraternity in both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
Commitment to Efficient and Transparent Transport System
Satish Sharma emphasized the government’s commitment to building a transparent, efficient and transporter-friendly system, stating that smooth mobility is essential for economic growth and public convenience.
The meeting was attended by Secretary Transport Avny Lavasa, IG Traffic, DG Finance (Transport Department), MD JKRTC M.A. War, Additional Commissioner Kashmir, RTOs of Jammu, Kashmir and Kathua, along with other senior officers of the Transport Department.
During the deliberations, the associations submitted a detailed memorandum highlighting issues impacting their livelihood and day-to-day operations.
Key Issues Raised by Transporters
One of the major concerns raised was the non-implementation of the approved E-bus schedule in Jammu and Srinagar. The Minister assured that he would personally review the matter to ensure structured and regulated E-bus operations while safeguarding the interests of existing transport operators.
Transporters also sought enhancement of Automated Testing Station (ATS) capacity and requested continuation of the existing MVD Fitness and Passing system. Acknowledging operational difficulties due to limited ATS availability, the Minister assured corrective measures to ease the process.
The associations expressed concern over the 200 percent increase in fitness and passing fees under new MoRTH guidelines, citing severe financial strain. Satish Sharma assured that the issue would be reviewed sensitively, keeping the economic realities of the transport community in mind.
Tariff Revision and E-Challan Concerns
The prolonged pendency of tariff revision since 2021 also came up for discussion. The Minister assured that the process would be examined and taken forward through proper stakeholder consultations.
Regarding the E-challan system, transporters sought streamlining in accordance with MoRTH norms along with proper supporting documentation. The Minister assured coordination with traffic authorities to ensure rationalisation and transparency.
The issue of illegal adda fee collection on National Highways, despite existing prohibitory orders, was also raised. Satish Sharma assured strict action against violators and ordered immediate verification of complaints.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, the Minister said all issues discussed would be reviewed regularly until resolved, adding that protecting transporter interests remains a top priority.
Tributes to General Zorawar Singh
Earlier in the day, Satish Sharma attended the Martyrdom Day ceremony of General Zorawar Singh, the legendary Dogra warrior renowned for his courage and military brilliance.
Paying rich tributes, the Minister described General Zorawar Singh as “one of the greatest military commanders in India’s history”, whose valour and leadership continue to inspire generations. He highlighted the General’s historic campaigns across Ladakh, Tibet and Baltistan, calling them a proud chapter in Jammu and Kashmir’s socio-military legacy.
The ceremony was attended by ex-servicemen, civil society members, youth groups and senior officials. The Minister interacted with participants and stressed the importance of educating the younger generation about the region’s rich martial heritage.
