June 15: In a significant development aimed at improving the accuracy of India’s digital identity ecosystem, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the deadline for free online Aadhaar document updates till June 14, 2026. This move comes as a major relief to millions of Aadhaar card holders across the country who have not updated their Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA) documents in recent years.
The update can be done absolutely free of cost on the myAadhaar portal—UIDAI’s official self-service platform. However, this benefit applies only to online updates, while changes involving mobile numbers, biometrics, or photographs will still require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra and incur a fee of ₹50.
The decision to extend the deadline yet again—this being the fifth such extension—has been taken with the aim of boosting participation in data correction and ensuring every Indian’s Aadhaar details are up to date. Experts believe this could significantly improve service delivery in areas like banking, healthcare, education, and government subsidies.
As per UIDAI’s advisory, Aadhaar holders who have not updated their records in the last 10 years are especially encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity. Outdated information can lead to service delays or rejection in welfare schemes and official verifications.
The process is simple: visit myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in, log in with your Aadhaar number and OTP, select the “Update Document” section, and upload scanned copies of acceptable PoI and PoA documents such as PAN card, passport, voter ID, electricity bill, etc.
India currently has over 1.38 billion Aadhaar users, and ensuring updated records is crucial for the integrity of the digital ID system. UIDAI has also launched campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of document hygiene and to prevent fraudulent misuse of outdated credentials.
