JUNE 20: In a significant move to enhance the effectiveness of ongoing skill development programs in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Secretary of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Atul Kumar Tiwari, chaired a high-level review meeting focusing on key initiatives such as PM Vishwakarma, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), SANKALP, and related schemes.
The session brought together senior officials, project implementers, and local stakeholders to assess progress, identify gaps, and strategize improvements in the skilling ecosystem across the Union Territory. The review emphasized aligning vocational training and skill development efforts with the unique economic landscape and emerging opportunities in Jammu and Kashmir.
Mr. Tiwari underscored the importance of tailoring training modules to meet the demands of local industries, crafts, and trades. He stressed that skilling must be relevant and job-oriented, especially in a region where traditional crafts and artisanal work play a vital economic role. PM Vishwakarma, a scheme aimed at empowering traditional artisans and craftsmen, received particular attention during the meeting.
One of the key focus areas discussed was the need to integrate skill training programs more deeply into higher education institutions, particularly colleges. This move is expected to broaden the reach of skilling initiatives among the youth and make them more employable. The Secretary also reviewed the performance of training centres across the UT, calling for the urgent revamp of underperforming centres to ensure quality and impactful training delivery.
Moreover, the implementation of the SANKALP program, which aims to strengthen institutional mechanisms for skill development at the state level, was also evaluated. Strategies were discussed to streamline coordination between departments and improve the monitoring of program outcomes.
Overall, the review marked a renewed push to make skill development in Jammu and Kashmir more inclusive, targeted, and effective. The overarching goal is to create livelihood opportunities, enhance employability, and empower the youth and artisan communities by providing them with the right skills in the right sectors.
