Fresh tensions have erupted at the Thailand–Cambodia border, leading to violent clashes between the two countries’ armed forces. The situation turned serious after airstrikes were reported and multiple casualties confirmed on both sides.
What Happened?
The conflict began near a long-disputed border area close to the Preah Vihear Temple, a region both countries have claimed in the past. According to early reports, a disagreement over military positioning and infrastructure development in the area led to a heated standoff. This quickly escalated into an exchange of gunfire and artillery shells between the two armies.
Shortly afterward, Thai fighter jets reportedly carried out limited airstrikes, targeting what they said were Cambodian military posts moving too close to the border.
Casualties and Local Impact
Local sources say at least 15 soldiers have lost their lives, and many others are injured. Civilians living near the conflict zone have also been affected. Several families were forced to leave their homes due to the risk of further violence. Evacuation efforts are underway in nearby towns in both Thailand’s Surin Province and Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey Province.
Global Concerns
The situation has drawn international attention. The regional group ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) has asked both countries to remain calm and resolve the issue through talks, not violence. The United Nations has also expressed concern, warning that the conflict could grow if not handled carefully.
Countries like India, China, and the United States have also released statements asking Thailand and Cambodia to avoid further military action.
What’s Next?
Troops from both sides are still stationed near the tense zone, and military alert levels remain high. Border crossings have been shut down, and there are fears of more clashes if diplomatic efforts fail.
Leaders from ASEAN are expected to hold a special meeting soon to discuss how to stop the conflict from escalating and protect people living near the border.
