SEP 20: Dr. Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC), presided over the 11th Convocation Ceremony of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RMLH). The ceremony witnessed the graduation of 250 postgraduate and DM students, along with the institution’s first batch of 100 MBBS graduates.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sheth congratulated the students and their families while reaffirming the government’s commitment to increasing the number of doctors uniformly across the country. He stressed aligning India’s healthcare system with the World Health Organization’s recommendation of a 1:1000 doctor-patient ratio and achieving a balanced UG-PG ratio of 1:1, bringing Indian medical education closer to global standards.

Highlighting reforms in medical training, Dr. Sheth said innovative initiatives by the NMC and the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences are integrating skill-based and virtual learning with traditional physical training, ensuring competency-based medical education. He urged graduates to focus on lifelong learning and their personal well-being.

Dr. Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, reminded students of their “profound responsibility to heal, lead, and serve the nation.” Dr. Vinod Kotwal, Additional Secretary, MoHFW, emphasized compassion, integrity, and empathy as the guiding principles of medical service, while lauding ABVIMS for its NABH accreditation.

The convocation also marked the release of the annual report Samhita. Established in 1932 as Willingdon Nursing Home, ABVIMS & RMLH today stands as a premier 1,532-bedded tertiary care institution, catering to nearly 12 lakh outpatients and 60,000 inpatients annually, with a “no refusal” emergency policy.
