December 13: In a tribute to one of India’s most iconic sporting institutions, the Department of Posts issued a commemorative postage stamp marking the 150th anniversary of the Bombay Gymkhana, celebrating its rich legacy of sporting excellence and enduring cultural contribution to the nation.
The commemorative stamp was formally unveiled at the historic Bombay Gymkhana premises in Mumbai by Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, in the presence of Shri Milind Deora, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Mr. Sanjiv Saran Mehra, President of Bombay Gymkhana, Ms. Suchita Joshi, Postmaster General, Navi Mumbai Region, along with other distinguished guests and members of the club.
Stamp as a Messenger of Values
Addressing the gathering, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed hope that the commemorative stamp would serve as a “travelling messenger,” carrying stories, values and inspiration as it journeys from envelope to envelope and hand to hand. He observed that, much like sport, a postage stamp has the power to connect people across generations and geographies.
The Minister noted that the stamp symbolises more than an institution’s milestone—it represents ideals of discipline, perseverance, teamwork and community spirit, inspiring young boys and girls to embrace sports, stay active, and believe in the transformative role of institutions.
Parallels Between India Post and Bombay Gymkhana
Drawing a meaningful parallel between India Post and the Bombay Gymkhana, Shri Scindia said both institutions are deeply rooted in connecting people and conveying emotions. He highlighted that under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Department of Posts is undergoing a metamorphic transformation, modernising its legacy systems, expanding its service footprint, and positioning itself to become the largest and most inclusive logistics organisation in the world over the next five years.

Established in 1875, the Bombay Gymkhana has stood as a distinguished pillar of India’s sporting and social heritage. Over one and a half centuries, it has nurtured generations of athletes while serving as a vibrant hub for cultural, recreational and sporting activities. The institution has played a pivotal role in promoting sportsmanship, camaraderie and community engagement, earning a revered place in India’s sporting history.

The commemorative stamp beautifully captures the iconic campus and grounds of Bombay Gymkhana, symbolising its enduring heritage and its contribution to India’s sporting landscape. Through this special issue, the Department of Posts honours the club’s remarkable 150-year journey while reinforcing its commitment to preserving and showcasing India’s sporting milestones through philately.
