Jan 14: Union Minister for Education, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, today joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai, in celebrating the harvest festival of Pongal, marking the occasion with traditional fervour and cultural warmth. The institute warmly welcomed the Minister and organised a special Pongal celebration, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu.

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan participated in the festivities at the Campus Community Hall, where members of the IIT Madras community gathered to commemorate the festival that symbolises gratitude, prosperity, and togetherness. The celebration highlighted the essence of Pongal as a harvest festival deeply rooted in agrarian traditions and collective harmony.

Extending his warm wishes, the Union Minister conveyed heartfelt Pongal greetings to the people of Tamil Nadu and to everyone celebrating the festival across the country. He noted that Pongal, synonymous with the vibrant culture of Tamil Nadu, reflects the spirit of abundance, harmony, and unity that binds communities together. He said the festival serves as a reminder of India’s rich cultural diversity and the values of gratitude and sharing.

Expressing his happiness at celebrating Pongal with the IIT Madras family, Shri Pradhan said the occasion beautifully reflects warmth, inclusiveness, and collective joy. He wished that the festival would bring good health, happiness, peace, prosperity, and harmony to all, especially the youth and academic community who play a vital role in shaping the nation’s future.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, students, staff, and residents of the campus, creating a festive atmosphere filled with cultural pride and mutual respect. Traditional elements of the Pongal celebration underscored the importance of preserving cultural traditions even within modern academic institutions.

The celebration was also attended by Shri Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Higher Education, and Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, who joined the Minister in interacting with students and staff during the programme. The presence of senior officials and academic leaders added significance to the event, reinforcing the bond between governance, education, and cultural values.
