India is commemorating 150 years of its National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ with a series of nationwide celebrations aimed at fostering national pride, unity and cultural consciousness. The milestone is being marked through mass singing programmes, cultural events and military band performances at prominent public locations across the country.
As part of these celebrations, the Indian Air Force (IAF) Band delivered a captivating performance at the amphitheatre at Rajiv Chowk, New Delhi, on January 21, 2026. The event drew the attention of commuters and citizens alike, transforming one of the capital’s busiest public spaces into a vibrant hub of patriotic expression.
The 45-minute musical performance featured a talented ensemble of 31 IAF musicians, who presented eleven carefully curated compositions. The repertoire showcased an impressive fusion of brass, reed, string and electronic instruments, reflecting the band’s versatility and musical excellence.
Among the highlights were stirring renditions of ‘Vande Mataram’, which resonated deeply with the audience, and ‘Sindoor’, a powerful composition created to commemorate the actions of the Indian Armed Forces during Operation Sindoor. The performances evoked strong emotions and reinforced the enduring spirit of patriotism and sacrifice.
Music has long been a cornerstone of India’s cultural and military heritage, serving as a powerful medium to inspire unity, courage and collective identity. For centuries, it has played a vital role in ceremonial traditions, morale-building and the expression of national values.
Established in 1944, the Indian Air Force Band has remained an integral part of the country’s military tradition. With a diverse repertoire that blends Indian classical, folk and Western musical styles, the band has consistently contributed to ceremonial occasions, national celebrations and public outreach initiatives.
Through its performances, the IAF Band seeks not only to entertain but also to instil a sense of patriotism and shared purpose among citizens. Its participation in the 150-year celebrations of ‘Vande Mataram’ underscores the Armed Forces’ commitment to preserving and promoting India’s cultural legacy.
The nationwide observance of this historic milestone reflects India’s collective respect for ‘Vande Mataram’—a song that has inspired generations during the freedom struggle and continues to unite the nation in its journey forward.
