RAJOURI, March 24: The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu conducted the 14th Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting of Krishi Vigyan Kendra Rajouri at its conference hall, aimed at strengthening agricultural extension services and improving farmer outreach across the district.
The meeting was chaired by Vice Chancellor Dr BN Tripathi in a hybrid mode, with participation from university officials, district officers, scientists, representatives from allied departments, and progressive farmers.
Emphasis on Technology Transfer to Farmers
Addressing the meeting, Dr Tripathi stressed the need to ensure effective transfer of agricultural technologies from research institutions to farmers’ fields. He called for consistent evaluation of the impact of KVK programmes, particularly those implemented through frontline extension activities.
He also highlighted the importance of expanding outreach to remote and far-flung areas so that the benefits of university-developed technologies reach every farmer. The Vice Chancellor further urged scientists to work collaboratively with allied departments to design action plans that address the specific agricultural challenges of the district.
Focus on Capacity Building and Sustainable Practices
Director Extension Dr Amrish Vaid underlined the role of the SAC in strengthening KVK activities for the benefit of the farming community. He emphasized the need to design training programmes in line with emerging agricultural challenges, with special focus on mushroom cultivation and beekeeping.
He also advocated for the inclusion of university-developed crop varieties, especially oilseeds, in frontline demonstrations and stressed the adoption of eco-friendly technologies for pest and disease management in line with growing interest in organic and sustainable farming.
Promotion of New Crop Varieties and Allied Activities
Director Research Dr SK Gupta called for greater awareness among farmers about the improved crop varieties developed by the university. He also suggested introducing training programmes on medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation to diversify farm income.
Dean Faculty of Veterinary Sciences Dr MS Badwal stressed the importance of promoting region-specific mineral mixtures for livestock to improve animal health and productivity.
Review of Achievements and Action Plan
Chief Scientist and Head KVK Rajouri Dr Arvind Kumar Ishar presented the Action Taken Report of the previous SAC meeting, along with the achievements and proposed action plan for 2026–27.
Members of the committee suggested incorporating more income-generating technologies and farmer-centric training programmes into the plan to enhance rural livelihoods.
Officials from various departments, including agriculture, fisheries, horticulture, and animal husbandry, also shared their inputs to strengthen coordination and improve implementation at the ground level.
The meeting concluded with a collective commitment to enhance collaboration, expand outreach, and promote innovative and sustainable agricultural practices across Rajouri District.
