RAJOURI, MARCH 29: In a vibrant showcase of cultural richness and community spirit, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), in collaboration with the District Administration Rajouri and Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), organised a Folk Tribal Musical Programme at Founder’s Park, drawing enthusiastic participation from across the region.
The event was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Sharma, who highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting the unique traditions of tribal communities. Addressing the gathering, he described such initiatives as a meaningful effort to celebrate indigenous culture, music, and lifestyle.
Culture Meets Community Engagement
The programme reflected a blend of tradition and awareness, with the Deputy Commissioner stressing the role of traditional tribal games in positively engaging youth. He noted that such activities can act as a constructive alternative, helping steer young individuals away from social challenges like substance abuse.
He also pointed out that tribal lifestyles, deeply rooted in harmony with nature, offer valuable lessons in sustainability—an aspect increasingly relevant in today’s world.
Traditional Games and Youth Participation
Adding an energetic dimension to the event, traditional games such as Bini and weightlifting competitions were organised, witnessing active participation from local youth. These activities not only revived age-old practices but also fostered a sense of pride and belonging among participants.
Showcase of Government Schemes and Local Products
A wide array of stalls set up by Self Help Groups (SHGs) and multiple government departments added depth to the programme. Departments including Handloom & Handicrafts, Agriculture, Tourism, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Social Welfare, and Health showcased their initiatives, schemes, and locally produced goods.
This platform allowed visitors to explore livelihood opportunities and gain awareness about various government-backed schemes aimed at empowering communities.
Immersive Tribal Experience
One of the major highlights of the event was the immersive display of tribal life. The Tourism Department created a traditional hut reflecting indigenous living styles, while BGSBU students constructed a mud house that captured the essence of tribal architecture.
An open-air museum further enriched the experience, featuring traditional tools and artifacts such as wooden ploughs, mud pottery, and straw-based seating arrangements, offering visitors a glimpse into the everyday life of tribal communities.
Cultural Performances Steal the Show
The cultural segment of the programme captivated the audience with soulful musical performances by artists from Gujjar and Pahari communities. Their performances beautifully showcased the region’s diverse musical heritage.
Students from BGSBU and Dawn Public School also presented a compelling skit portraying tribal customs, marriage traditions, and social practices, earning appreciation from the audience.
Recognising Contributions
The event concluded on a celebratory note with the felicitation of participants, performers, and contributors who played a key role in making the programme a success.
Several dignitaries, including senior administrative officers, academicians, and prominent citizens, attended the event, reflecting a collective commitment towards preserving and promoting tribal heritage in Jammu & Kashmir.
