6 May: SRINAGAR: In a move aimed at strengthening renewable energy adoption, the Jammu and Kashmir Solar Association met Minister for Science and Technology Satish Sharma to discuss the expansion of rooftop solar systems across the Union Territory.

The meeting, held at the Minister’s residence in Church Lane, took place under the broader policy direction of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, with a focus on accelerating the transition toward clean and sustainable energy solutions.

During the interaction, the delegation highlighted key challenges faced by stakeholders in implementing solar projects, particularly in remote and underserved regions. They emphasized the need for streamlined procedures, faster clearances, and stronger institutional support to boost rooftop solar adoption.

Responding to the concerns, Minister Satish Sharma assured the delegation of the government’s full support for renewable energy initiatives. He stressed that expanding solar infrastructure is a priority for the administration, especially in areas where conventional power supply remains limited or inconsistent.

The Minister underlined the importance of rooftop solar systems in reducing dependency on traditional energy sources, lowering electricity costs, and promoting environmentally sustainable practices. He noted that such initiatives align with broader national goals of increasing renewable energy capacity.

In a significant directive, the Minister instructed the Chief Executive Officer of Jammu and Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKED) to resolve pending issues faced by the association within a defined timeframe. The move is expected to facilitate smoother implementation of ongoing and upcoming solar projects.

Officials present at the meeting indicated that efforts will be made to simplify processes and ensure better coordination between departments involved in renewable energy development. The focus will remain on time-bound execution and effective monitoring of solar initiatives.

The JK Solar Association welcomed the Minister’s proactive approach and expressed confidence that the assurances provided would lead to faster adoption of solar energy across the region. Members of the delegation said that improved policy support and administrative clarity would encourage more households and institutions to invest in rooftop solar systems.

Experts believe that Jammu and Kashmir holds significant potential for solar energy, given its geographical advantages and increasing energy demand. Expanding rooftop installations can play a crucial role in enhancing energy security while contributing to environmental sustainability.

The meeting marks a positive step toward strengthening the renewable energy ecosystem in the Union Territory, with both the government and stakeholders working toward a cleaner and more energy-efficient future.
