21 July: REASI, J&K: Authorities opened all gates of the Salal Dam on the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district following heavy rainfall that led to a significant rise in the river’s water level. The move was taken as a precautionary measure to regulate the inflow and ensure the safety of the dam.
Officials said the continuous rainfall across the Chenab catchment area caused water levels to increase rapidly, prompting dam authorities to release excess water in a controlled manner. The operation was carried out under established safety protocols to manage the reservoir efficiently.
The administration issued advisories urging residents living along the banks of the Chenab River to remain alert and avoid venturing near the river. People were advised to stay away from low-lying areas and strictly follow instructions issued by local authorities and disaster management teams.
District officials, police, and disaster response agencies have been placed on alert to monitor the situation. Teams have been deployed in vulnerable locations to ensure public safety and respond promptly to any emergency arising from the increased water discharge.
Authorities are maintaining close coordination with weather agencies and hydropower officials to monitor rainfall patterns and river flow. Continuous surveillance of the dam and downstream areas is being carried out to assess any changes in water levels.
The opening of the dam gates is a routine flood management measure adopted during periods of heavy inflow. Officials clarified that regulated water release helps maintain reservoir levels within safe operating limits and reduces pressure on the dam structure during intense rainfall.
