Mumbai, August 26, 2026: The Indian Navy is set to commission Nipun, the second Diving Support Vessel (DSV) of the Nistar-class, at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on August 31. The induction is expected to strengthen the Navy’s specialised underwater operations and deep-sea diving capabilities.
Nipun has been designed to support complex diving and underwater activities and is equipped with modern diving systems. Its induction will provide the Indian Navy with enhanced capabilities for undertaking specialised operations beneath the sea, while also strengthening the support infrastructure available to naval divers.
Boost to India’s Underwater Maritime Capabilities
Diving Support Vessels play a crucial role in naval operations that require specialised underwater expertise. These platforms provide a dedicated base for divers and support equipment during missions involving underwater inspection, maintenance, salvage and other deep-sea activities.
With Nipun joining the fleet, the Indian Navy will gain additional capacity to conduct such operations with greater efficiency and operational readiness.
The vessel’s specialised systems also reflect the increasing technological sophistication of India’s naval platforms and the country’s efforts to develop advanced maritime capabilities domestically.
Another Step Towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The commissioning of Nipun is also significant from the perspective of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence. Indigenous construction of specialised naval vessels demonstrates the growing capabilities of India’s domestic shipbuilding industry.
The vessel has been built by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), Visakhapatnam, further highlighting the role of Indian shipyards in developing sophisticated platforms for the armed forces.
The project contributes not only to the Navy’s operational capabilities but also to the wider domestic defence ecosystem by supporting Indian manufacturing, engineering expertise, specialised technology and skilled employment.
