New Delhi, October 1, 2026: India’s digital payments ecosystem continued to record strong activity in September, with transactions through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) reaching 24.07 billion, marking a 23 per cent increase year-on-year, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
The total value of UPI transactions also registered significant growth, rising 18 per cent year-on-year to ₹29.37 lakh crore during the month. The latest figures underline the continued expansion of UPI as a major digital payment platform used by consumers and businesses across the country.
UPI Processes Over 800 Million Transactions a Day
On a daily average, UPI handled approximately 802 million transactions in September, with the average daily transaction value reaching around ₹97,913 crore.
The September figures also represent a new level of daily activity for the payment system, with average transactions crossing the 800-million mark. The growth comes as digital payments continue to become increasingly integrated into everyday purchases, transfers and merchant transactions.
Although the monthly transaction count was lower than August’s record 24.51 billion, the decline was relatively modest. September had 30 days compared with 31 in August, meaning the month-on-month comparison is also influenced by the difference in the number of days.
On a daily basis, UPI activity remained strong, with September’s average of 802 million transactions higher than the August daily average.
Transaction Value Remains Close to Record Levels
UPI transactions were worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September, compared with ₹29.82 lakh crore in August.
The average daily transaction value stood at nearly ₹97,913 crore in September. According to industry analysis reported after the release of the NPCI data, the increase in average transaction value was supported by relatively higher-value payments during the month.
The figures come ahead of the festive shopping period, when digital payment activity typically receives additional momentum from consumer spending and merchant transactions.
IMPS Transactions Also Register Growth
NPCI data also showed continued activity on the Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) platform.
The value of IMPS transactions stood at ₹7.06 lakh crore in September, representing an 18 per cent year-on-year increase. IMPS processed an average of approximately 11.80 million transactions per day, with the average daily transaction value at around ₹23,530 crore.
The latest payment data highlights the growing role of instant digital transaction systems in India’s financial ecosystem, with both UPI and IMPS handling substantial volumes each month.
UPI Continues to Expand Digital Payments
The September figures come as UPI continues to operate at exceptionally high transaction volumes. While the monthly total moderated slightly from the record recorded in August, year-on-year growth remained strong in both transaction volume and value.
The sustained scale of UPI activity reflects its widespread use for person-to-person transfers, merchant payments and other digital transactions. With daily transaction volumes now exceeding 800 million on average, the platform remains a central component of India’s rapidly expanding digital payments landscape.
