Katra, October 6, 2026: Chief Executive Officer of the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), Sachin Kumar Vaishya, on Tuesday reviewed arrangements for the upcoming Shardiya Navratra, scheduled to be observed from October 11 to 20, 2026, at a meeting with the civil administration, police, security agencies and other stakeholders in Katra.

With a significant increase in pilgrim footfall expected during the Navratra period, the CEO emphasised coordinated preparations focused on crowd management, pilgrim safety, disaster response and emergency preparedness along the pilgrimage route.

Focus on Crowd Management and Emergency Preparedness

During the meeting, Sachin Kumar Vaishya directed all concerned agencies to maintain close coordination and ensure that adequate arrangements are in place to handle the anticipated rush of pilgrims.

He stressed the importance of disaster preparedness and firefighting measures, including regular mock drills and deployment of rescue equipment at appropriate locations.

Officials were also directed to ensure regular public announcements and strengthen joint beat monitoring to facilitate smooth movement of pilgrims and provide timely assistance whenever required.

Designated holding areas will also be utilised to regulate pilgrim movement during periods of heavy rush.

Integrated Command Centre to Monitor Yatra

The CEO called for effective utilisation of the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for real-time monitoring of the pilgrimage route and quick response to emerging situations.

Strengthening communication systems was also highlighted during the meeting to ensure seamless coordination among the agencies involved in managing the Yatra.

The use of technology and coordinated monitoring is expected to help authorities respond promptly to crowd-related challenges and emergencies during the Navratra period.

RFID Cards Mandatory for Pilgrims

The Shrine Board reiterated that possession of a valid RFID card is mandatory for every pilgrim undertaking the pilgrimage.

To facilitate verification and monitoring, additional handheld RFID scanners will be deployed at key locations.

The CEO also directed officials to strengthen the verification process for Pithoo and Ponywallas associated with the pilgrimage. The measure is aimed at preventing impersonation and ensuring that only properly verified service providers operate along the route.

Sanitation, Water and Illumination Arrangements Reviewed

The meeting also reviewed arrangements related to sanitation, drinking water, illumination and overall pilgrim safety in Katra.

With large numbers of devotees expected to visit the shrine during Shardiya Navratra, officials were asked to ensure that essential civic and pilgrim facilities remain functional and adequately staffed throughout the period.

Security agencies briefed the meeting on the multi-tier security grid being put in place for the Yatra. The deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRTs) along the pilgrimage route was also reviewed as part of the overall security and emergency response mechanism.

The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board and district administration are expected to maintain close coordination throughout the Navratra period to ensure the safe and orderly movement of pilgrims.

With Shardiya Navratra beginning on October 11, authorities are now finalising preparations to accommodate the anticipated increase in pilgrim arrivals at Katra and the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine.
